Carl Béchard

Carl Béchard is very well known in Quebec’s theatre world, and active both in front of and behind the curtain. He has staged several productions, including a highly praised version of Molière’s Le Malade Imaginaire at the Théater du Nouveau Monde in 2006 and, more recently, the hit Toc Toc at the Just for Laughs Festival. He also directed Ceci n’est pas un Schmürz! and Vlan! dans la gueule, for which he received the Masque prize for the discovery of the year in 1998. More recently, he has worked on Au delà du rire! for the Théâtre du Rideau Vert. He has performed on stage in L’Asile de la pureté, Glengarry Glen Ross, Cabaret des mots, Le Misanthrope, Ogre, Woyzeck, Les liaisons dangereuses, and La Commedia Dell’Arte et Tartuffe. A piece he wrote was performed at the Ubu theatre with Denis Marleau as director. Carl Béchard can be seen in Lulu, Merz Variétés, Luna-Park, Les Ubs, Oulipo Show, Cantate Grise, Ubu Cycle, and La trahison orale, etc. Carl Béchard has also been a player with the Ligue nationale d’improvisation. He is about to embark on several European tours. As a television actor, his notable roles include playing Harold Morrissette in Virginie. He can be seen in the popular soap opera L’Auberge du chien noir, and will be seen in the new TV series Le Cœur au vent. He has acted in Quatre et demi, Watatatow, Les Bougon, L’Ombre de l’Épervier, Le Volcan Tranquille, Un Homme au foyer, and Le temps d’une paix. Carl Béchard teaches voice and speech at workshops he directs at the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Montréal.
