Champ-de-Mars] Reconstruction of a religious service performed during the 17th century in a French convent. With Hervé Niquet, organist and director.
The religious services conducted in the convents of Paris during the Grand Siècle mixed the mundane with the mystical. Works originally written for mixed choir were adapted to meet the requirements of performance in a convent (where the only voices were female, with a few accompanying instruments). Hervé Niquet has reconstructed one such office, used during Holy Week around 1695 at the convent of the Order of the Visitation of Saint Mary (the Visitandines) in Paris. The core of the work is the mass Super flumina Babylonis for six voices by François Cosset. Interspersed in the movements of this mass are petits motets by Lully, Lorenzani, and Charpentier.
