Champ-de-Mars] Trios and quartets with flute and double bass by Stamitz, Vanhal, and Haydn. With David Sinclair, doublebass.
As well as writing string quartets, the form par excellence of classical chamber music, German composers experimented during the 18th century with trios, quartets, and quintets for diverse combinations of instruments. For example, they would combine the timbres of winds with that of strings, and give to the sonorous voice of the double bass — a voice that sometimes sounds comic and at other times serious — a role demanding considerable virtuosity. |
