Trios and quartets by Joseph Haydn, with Marc Destrubé, violin

That classical chamber music owes everything to Joseph Haydn might appear to be an exaggerated claim, but in the era of the style gallant, which saw the gradual abandonment of the basso continuo and of the compositional principals of the baroque, it was Haydn who, alone and throughout his life, successfully and steadfastly developed the string quartet. Within this structure he developed a rigorous form, invented beautiful melodies, and wittily and gracefully found a perfect balance between intelligence and feeling.
