17th-century English music for voice and consorts of flutes and viols, with Laura Pudwell, soprano

Throughout its history, England has been relatively isolated and, for this reason, its music has been quite distinctive. Seventeenth-century English music was distinguished by its refined melancholy, but it did not shrink from occasionally expressing a popular kind of earthiness. This contrasting palette will be illustrated by lively dances and variations put together by Holborne and Brade, side by side with fantasies and ayres by Tallis, Byrd, and Ferrabosco, in which the voice blends with the fragile and expressive sonority of the viol.
