Nicandro et Fileno, tous deux avancés en âge et cherchant une dernière fois le bonheur, se proposent l’un à l’autre le mariage de leurs filles : Filli à Fileno et Clori à Nicandro. Mais, ces jeunes filles, sous divers prétextes, refusent de faire la volonté de leur père, car elles aiment toutes les deux Lidio, amant volage et frivole, qui court après toutes les bergères. Eurillo, d’autre part, se meurt d’amour pour Filli qui le rejette pour Lidio et crie vengeance contre celui qui le dérobe de l’objet de sa passion. S’ensuivent les chassés-croisés d’usage. Nicandro et Fileno, réalisant enfin que leur idée n’était que fantaisie, doivent se contenter du sort que leur impose leur âge avancé.
