While writing sonatas and symphonies as a child he was already irresistibly attracted by the opera. He began writing for the stage as soon as he could, tackling genres such as <em>opera buffa <\/em>(in <em>La Finta semplice)<\/em>, <em>singspiel <\/em>(in <em>Bastien und Bastienne) <\/em>and, most serious of all, <em>opera seria, <\/em>based on stories drawn from Antiquity (in <em>Ascanio in Alba<\/em>, <em>Lucio Silla, <\/em>or <em>Mitridate, re di Ponto<\/em>).
