À l’époque baroque, les Italiens privilégient le violon, qu’ils avaient inventé au début du XVI^e siècle. Mais le hautbois, perfectionné par les Français vers 1660, les a vite séduits, comme en font foi nombre de sonates et de concertos signés Tomaso Albinoni, Antonio Vivaldi ou Giovanni Benedetto Platti. Sans compter qu’il sera peu après intégré à part entière dans les orchestres des Cours et des maisons d’opéra.
