En 1528, en pleine Renaissance, Balthasar de Castiglione fait paraître Le Livre du courtisan. Sous forme dialoguée, celui-ci décrit un idéal de vie qui sera suivi dans toutes les cours d’Europe pendant près de deux siècles. En plus de laisser une large place à la musique et à la danse, Castiglione recommande au courtisan de cultiver la sprezzatura, c’est-à-dire une disposition faite d’esprit, de grâce et de désinvolture, disposition qu’on retrouvera dans l’extraordinaire floraison instrumentale des débuts du Baroque.
