In 1528, when the Renaissance was in full swing, Baldsarre Castiglione published The Book of the Courtier. Its precepts for how the perfect gentleman should live, described through fictional conversations, were followed in all the courts of Europe for most of the next two centuries. Castiglione recommended that, as well as becoming skilled in music and dance, a courtier should develop sprezzatura. This attitude of easy, graceful nonchalance is exactly what characterizes the instrumental music that blossomed, extraordinarily, at the beginning of the Baroque.
