Les Boréades de Montréal, Les Concerts de la Chapelle and Le Conseil de la culture de l’Estrie present the ninth edition of the Académie de musique ancienne de Saint-Camille.

The project consists of three days of intensive training. Each participant will take a master class related to the practice of his or her instrument (7 h), a theory class (1 h), a dance class (1H30) and an ensemble class (8h), with the aim of discovering or deepening their knowledge of early music (Baroque) repertoires. The course culminates in a public concert by the participants. Each year, a new style, a new period and new composers are included in the course syllabus. For the 2025 edition, French music from the first half of the 18th century will be studied, with the prologue to Marc Antoine Charpentier’s five-act tragedy Médée at the heart of the practical component. A Baroque dance component will be offered to participants as a first step towards embodying the rhythmic and stylistic subtleties of this music through movement, so as to enable them to perform with greater flexibility, vivacity and creativity.

In the Baroque period (circa 1600-1750), dance was at the heart of social and cultural life. It was not only a form of entertainment, but also a means of expression, communication and social representation. The court of Louis XIV, for example, is a striking testimony to this: the king himself was a passionate dancer. Musical forms such as the sarabande, gigue, courante and minuet formed a large part of the repertoire of this period.

The location of the workshop and catering, as well as the option of home-stay accommodation, if desired, will be highly beneficial in terms of human and professional exchanges, as well as each participant’s commitment to his or her own personal development as a musician.

This training program is open to participants from all over Quebec, with the possibility of reimbursement of travel and accommodation expenses.
