Humor and music have been put together in many ways for a very long time and, as the results show, they often get on well together. Some composers have gone beyond rather ridiculous imitations of animal cries or human activities to mock music itself, writing parodies of genres trendy in their day, or of the habits and compulsions of musicians, particularly those from the world of opera. At same time that, in his Concertos comiques, Michel Corrette made fun of the occasionally quite lewd chansons and vaudevilles heard in fairground theatres, Nicolas Racot de Grandval, in his Cantates comiques, was satirizing the most languorous and sublime of the arias sung by his contemporaries, by writing tunes in these genres to be sung to new texts by, say, sloshed boozers or blasé divas.
